Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

This spider floats on the lake and is very fast. It also does not die easy. There are a lot of spiders like this one in the vicinity. They seem to like the dock poles on the lake to make their webs or just to hang out By the water. I hope someone can help me identify this spider so my coworkers and I can tell customers what they are and won’t harm them if they crawl on a boat. Thank you !

This is a long jawed orb weaver in the genus Tetragnatha. They are also called stretch spiders because of their long bodies and tendency to stretch themselves out when at rest – like your one is doing. Most species like to build horizontal webs over water and many can also run over water if necessary. They are harmless to humans.
