Mouse spider? I don't know a lot about them (aka nothing) but I do know it was bedtime and my cat was rounding the corner. She will stick her nose into a mouse trap if she sees me interested in it, so I knew I had to move the spider asap. Unfortunately, I only had a bottle on hand... It didn't end well for him. I'm sorry lil buddy. I promise it wasn't on purpose. I was just rushing and panicking. I'll do better in the future.

You did your best. They can be fragile little things. I think this was a Parson spider in the genus Herpyllus. I am guessing from your location that it is Herpyllus ecclesiasticus – The eastern Parson Spider. The markings on its abdomen reminded people of the old style cravat worn by clergy long ago. They are ground spiders which hide out during the day and emerge to hunt insects at night.
