Comments & ID Thoughts

My guess is female Phidippus johnsoni. I don't know much about spiders though. Found her next to my sleeping husband on the bed. Caught and released outside. Recently did some construction in the house that may have disturbed her.

I agree that she looks like P. johnsonni. https://spiderid.com/spider/salticidae/phidippus/johnsoni/ Thank you for catching and releasing.
Yes sawing during construction could bring out spiders. Vibrations can draw spiders toward the source. I learned that while using a hand saw on saplings. Spiders ran right up to the saw, I had to keep stopping to move them.
Yesterday I found a website that recommended using a vibrating battery operated toothbrush to lure spiders toward you. That might make some people hesitate to use those toothbrushes, whereas I’m going to go out and buy one.

Oh my god snap. I read that too recently and that was my exact reaction 🙂 – It has to be a sonic toothbrush apparently.

I think it was an ad in one of my links. I tried to google it, with interesting results. Now I have things like “vibrator for spiders” in my search history and ad algorithms. I’ll see some interesting ads in the future. There appears to be many spider-themed products that just should not exist. ;( Here’s a study I found on the effects of manmade vibrations on spiders: https://escholarship.org/content/qt6131s0rz/qt6131s0rz.pdf?t=o6apip The conclusion is that Araneus diadematus that had webs on natural surfaces caught more prey than ones that had webs on manmade surfaces which are less flexible. That theoretically could impact… Read more »

I read this this morning b4 heading out to work and almost spat out my cornflakes. I tried to write how happy it made me but I had to delete because in the context it sounded like a product review for a very different sort of website. :-). But you made my day! I can’t figure out how to include the link because it was a pdf it was called “brush up on your spiders” on britishspiders.org.uk by Geoff Oxford.

He uses a colgate 360 degree surround and says the spiders really attack it. I’m sure the lovely people at colgate would be thrilled.

I ordered a sonic toothbrush a few days ago. I didn’t know they existed in addition to electric. It’s good that you told me it was sonic. There are ultrasound toothbrushes too, very expensive. I wish I hadn’t gotten blocked from leaving reviews an amazon. They’re the website that sells spider vibrators and spider-themed accessories. I could have fun with my sonic spider lure toothbrush review. That’s the kind of thing that’s possibly why I’m banned from reviewing. They don’t tell people why. It’s actually possible that my reviews were too brief and to the point! Clearly they don’t really… Read more »
