A friend asked me to try and identify this since i have better internet access and my best guess was a fishing spider but they aren't near to bodies of water and have seen several around

I think this is a Dark Fishing Spider, Dolomedes tenebrosus. They live in trees in forests hunting insects, lizards, amphibians, anything they can grab. Fishing Spiders are very good at climbing and eat many kinds of small animals.
They can bite people in self-defense, but the venom is not medically significant. The cup and paper method is the best way to gently relocate one to a tree.

I agree with dark fishing spider. They are not always found near water. sometimes even indoors. They can be a bit of a challenge to catch because they are quick if spooked.
