Hi, your image has been filed. (See above image for ID.) 🙂
This one is called “Stepník” in Slovak
Yes, some of the Eresus are called velvet spiders.
IDK what you are replying to but this pic was taken in Slovakia, and the local name is “Stepník” in slovak language, which would translate as “Steppe Spider” in english
Didn’t mean to upset you, official common name for the entire Eresidae family is velvet spider
in English. Steppe Spider is what I find in European arachnological society nomenclature.
I know where the photo was taken his new species has a limited European range. None of this family are found in north America, but are in the world spider catalog.
What individuals here are here have been imported by museums.
Common names are such fun.
its okay you did not upset me I was just confused of what you were reacting to. Well this spider has been officially recorded as a part of the country´s spiders its been reguralrly spotted for quite a few years in a row, as the climate of the country is rapidly changing, scientists predict more and more of them 🙂 they are beautiful though 🙂 just wanted to say to the fellow Slovak guy under what name he should search in the local sources 🙂
Yes, they are pretty spiders, they are endemic to north central Europe. Still, one I would love to get for a pet is like this:

Here is yet another odd. Commoname for this new spider is ‘Herman’s ladybird spider’, making 4 species cataloged as Eresus hermani species. Eresus sandaliatus in the WSC.
Dobre Den, having moved to Slovakia I’m taking a keen interest in the spider fauna. The Eresus taxa in central europe has been quite volatile lately and there is still some uncertainty and likely to be changes, but this should be identifiable to the current species definition based on the colouration (especially legs), prosoma shape and timing.. In theory at least. Of the three current taxa thought to occur in Slovakia at the moment E.hermani, E.kollari and E.moravicus, the differences are:- Mostly red hind legs – hermani, moravicus Bicoloured red/black hing legs – kollari However even those with ‘mostly’ red… Read more »
