Is this a black widow?
No. It’s in the same family, Theridiidae. This is a False Widow in genus Steatoda. They are harmless and can eat ticks, roaches, Widows, Recluses, lots of flies, and many other bugs. Their venom is not medically significant to humans. They prefer to escape and hide from us if they feel threatened by people. Contrary to popular belief, Black Widows don’t have a population in New Jersey. Our Moderator lives there. BlackWidows sometimes are transported into grocery stores, usually on grapes.
