What is this spider?
Did I discover a new species?
Asagena sp. Maybe Asagena fulva. https://bugguide.net/node/view/439575 You only gave us one minute in the middle of the night before you went from ‘What is this’ to ‘Is it a new species!” 😉 It’s a really cool-looking spider. It’s in family Theridiidae, with the Widows. It looks quite dangerous, but isn’t. There are at least two possible species in genus Asagena that it could be. A. fulva has the closest markings and geographical population.
Please take your time. I looked at the Asagenia fulva images and I think it looks different. I thought maybe it is a relative of the red widow but that looks different, too. I have another photo which show the markings better. I will post it as a new post so you can see. On the topside of its black abdomen, has 2 white stripes with 2 white dots between the stripes.
Thanks for a quick reply. I appreciate it!
