Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

Dolomedes triton with prey--notice he is missing a leg. I fed him an earwig, and it took the leg off. The picture was taken in a very curious instance: the spider had grabbed a grasshopper nymph and was consuming it when a small beetle tried to hide underneath the spider. After a minute of patient toleration, he spider responded by seizing the beetle in its pedipalps and going under water, where it bit and killed the beetle, allowing it to float back to the surface, dead, and dropped the baby grasshopper to the bottom. As a result, it was out of both meals. I just thought that behavior was quite peculiar and worth noting.
