This is Steatoda borealis, a Northern Cobweaver. She’s quite harmless. The web is a true cobweb. Spiders like her in family Theridiidae are sometimes called Tangleweb Spiders. The webs look dirty and useless – that’s the catch! Many insects and spiders innately recognize the structured patterns of webs and avoid them. But, if the web looks like an old unguarded random mess, there is no threat perceived. So the bug wanders in and soon trips a taught strong line of silk hidden flat against a surface.
