This is a Cat-Faced orb weaver, they are harmless to humans unless you are allergic to their venom. I catch them all the time. The prettiest one I have seen was a reddish color. usually tan in color, about 2 inches long with legs spread out. They like to eat native bugs, especially crickets. Fun pets.
Thanks Blade8, I found a picture similar to mine on spideridentifications.com (completely straw-coloured but foots the bill for hanging head-down in an intricate spider web which she removes every morning, leaving only the strong long strands for the next night 🙂 I hope they don’t eat praying mantises as I have quite a few in that area close to my potted veg&herb patch!

your welcome.
I don’t think they’ll eat your mantises, but I’m not sure.
