L. mactans or l. variolus? Found on the underside of a decaying log on the forest floor. I did not peak at the ventral side as I did not want to disturb the spider.

That’s a black widow.
It’s a “Northern Black Widow”
Thanks, is there any reason you suspect this is a northern black widow versus a southern black widow? I know the best method for distinction is to look at their ‘hourglass’ shapes on their undersides, but I didn’t want to disturb this spider, so I didn’t check.
