I thought this was a Joro spider but coloring is off. Took a photo on iPhone and it said it was a golden orb weaver but web does not appear to be.

Thanks for asking. Your photo is of a Golden Silk Orbweaver. Her web is a bit messed up, making the structure more difficult to recognize. The Joro (translates into a word for “prostitute”) is Trichonephila clavata. Same genus, different species. Both have yellow silk orb webs. The Joros are a fairly recent accidental introduction to Georgia from Asia. There is concern that they will harm the population of the spiders in your photo by out-competing them. It isn’t known yet if both species can successfully co-exist.
