Spotted indoors; primarily brown with black stripes down back; easily the size of a twonie; hasn't moved much even when i got relatively close to look at it
It might be a Grass Spider. This is the time of year when the begin to be found indoors and in big funnel-type webs outdoors. They tend to hide quickly if a flashlight is aimed at them. They have webs that are low-tension (bugs can’t jump off) and slippery instead of sticky. The spiders move incredibly swiftly to grab prey. They’re harmless. My dad has one is his basement that has lived at least 2 years and has a big elaborate web of tunnels.
Local friend helped identify it as a young Canadian wolf spider, which apparently are quite common in this area (we’re close to Gatineau Park). It is indeed harmless as long as we don’t bother it, and a well fed one can get pretty big.
Originally being from the States, I’d never seen a wolf spider inside before, and only ever met bigger ones, but the behaviour is about right; it was entirely unconcerned by my presence, even when i had a light on it in the dark, and it disappeared FAST this morning according to my partner.
