Comments & ID Thoughts

Sorry for the out of focus spider - my iPad would only focus on the rest of the scene. This spider spun a large irregular web between tall shrubs at my front door walk. It’s large with a huge bulbous abdomen(?), four white spots in a square on the belly and what looks like reddish spots on both ends of the white spots square. Also seems to have maybe two lengthwise white ripple lines on its back, can’t quite see clearly. Active at 6:30pm Los Angeles, Silver Lake hillside area above a large reservoir, low 70’s temp. I put a dead moth on one of its strands. It stopped, paused a minute or two, then quickly climbed to hide in one of the shrubs. I left. Returned 3-4 minutes later. It had come out and most of the moth was gone. I put two dead small spiders in its web, went away. Came out a few minutes later and both dead spiders were gone. The big spider was very active, moving around in a different section of its web but near where the offerings had been. Did it eat all of them? No remains seen anywhere. Could it have pushed them out of its web, waiting for fresh prey?
