Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

Hello
I caught a spider for a school project. The body was about one centimetre in size. I put the spider under a microscope for the photo, that's why it looks so big. I would greatly appreciate it if someone could identify the species of this spider.

I am not an expert but I had a look at various possibilities. The eyes led me to think it was some sort of sac spider. The closest match was this one Cetonana laticeps

The only thing is that the male of this species is only 5mm…that’s the body size only …excluding the legs. I can tell your spider is male from the shape of its pedipalps. If your spider is bigger it may be something else.
Good luck with your project.

You will be able to get a good estimate of the spider’s size if you know the size of the grid it was placed on. When spidersizes are quoted in literature they are always the size of the body only. Excluding legs and pedipalps and even excluding jaws and spinnerets.. if the grid is 5mm by 5mm like the grids we use in our lab then your spider is the right size to be C. laticeps.
