A friend thought the markings on the abdomen of this guy were interesting. Any idea what kind it is?

Looks like a common house spider! Parasteatoda tepidariorum.

Not sure at all but….My guess would be Steatoda spp because it is so dark and shiny. It could be this one ..Steatoda borealis perhaps..https://bugguide.net/node/view/1570800
The legs of your spider are paler and more banded than usual. But it could be a juvenile?
There is also the outside chance that it is Steatoda bipunctata… a European import that looks identical to S. borealis ….but there have been no confirmed sightings of it in New York. Both are harmless.
