no clue what this is!! ~1 inch in size, but looks like a dead ringer for a black lace weaver

Yes I think you’re right that this is a male black lace weaver. Amaurobius ferox. When sizes are quoted for spiders, they are for the size of the body only…excluding the legs and pedipalps…the body size of a male A. ferox is half an inch. If you include their legs it would bring them up to an inch.

Don’t feel silly at all. I only got interested in spiders a few years ago…when I was trying to identify a cobweb spider i found… I was the exact same as you. I assumed a spider’s size included the legs. Who knew. 🙂
