Comments & ID Thoughts

Was tentatively identified as trap doos spider - Ummididae. Found two of these beautiful spiders next to our house in Lynchburg, central Virginia, USA, in an area without grass but mulch and clay soil. The body is just below 2.5 cm long (a little less than 1 inch). Add the legs and it is an impressive large spider. From the top all black, all shiny, except for the abdomen that seems to be covered with short fine hair. The underside of the abdomen has 4 whitish/yellowish spots. We caught the spider - what was easy as it "played dead", pulling in the legs and not moving at all for a few minutes. No worries - we released the creatures completely unharmed a little distance away from the house back into nature.
