I think it is a cat faced orb weaver…Araneus gemmoides

For California it’s either Araneus illaudatus https://bugguide.net/node/view/326401/data or Araneus gemma. They look too similar. I’ll file it as Araneus for now.

True. You would need to see the underside to be sure. I went with A. gemmoides because inaturalist only had a handful of sightings of A illaudatus but loads of sightings of A gemmoides in California.
