I am guessing it’s a giant house spider he was found in a cup next to a windowsill. Largest spider Ive ever seen.

Yes indeed. In the genus Eratigena. There are a few species in the genus in ireland. It’s a male looking for love

Thank you for the insight. That is mildly terrifying, I thought it was a female because of its size, but horrified now to know that the females are bigger than him!

No u are all right. The males of this genus have much longer legs. Females are fatter but smaller…..legs wise. Also once a female gets a good spot for a web she will stay there…out of the way. The males go wandering to find a mate this time of year.
