This is a photo of the abdomen. It is a type of orb weaver but the legs are making think it is not a yellow garden spider.

I am pretty sure it is a yellow garden spider….Argiope aurantia….. The legs tend to be quite variable and younger spiders have more banded legs.

OK, thank you. We will go with yellow garden spider. I’ve never seen one before and have lived in New England my whole life. This one is on the stairs going up to our deck.
I agree with Nod.
I’ve never seen one in New England, but there are sightings. Older people told me that the Argiope spiders used to be fairly common here.
