My current guess is Araneus diadematus from browsing images. It's a big one! Probably around an inch long in the body.

It came back out later today and looks like it’s slightly less than 1 inch body. Very cool friend.
You got the ID! Your friend is female. The females are much larger and make the big webs. She hides during the sunniest hours in a retreat that she finds or builds with silk and found objects. I had a lot of fun with one that made a new hiding place every day. Occasionally your spider will eat her web and build a fresh clean one. Very cool! Thank you for the info. She’s a good friend and has found a nice hiding spot in the bush the web is attached to. We’ll be keeping an eye on her!
