Comments & ID Thoughts
It's definitely a type of orbweaver, was hanging from a tree over the sidewalk at perfect head height, on a single thread. Almost walked into it face first, so I carefully tried to relocate it to a nearby bush.

I believe this is a marbeled orb weaver, Araneus marmoreus
I wasn’t sure whether it was this or a four-spot orb-weaver, considering the abdomen was so pale i could barely make out a pattern at all. Either way I’m glad I saw it in the dark before I walked into it, I’m sure that would’ve been panic inducing for both of us.
Araneus quadratus seems like a good answer. The leg band markings and leg hairs don’t match Araneus marmoreus. I like how you describe it as being at “perfect head height.” I’m short, I walk under the Orbweavers. My husband and I hiked a forest that had Orbweavers every few feet iin any direction. He’s overcoming archnophobia, but he was getting panicky with the nonstop spider webs engulfing his head. 😉
My guess would be a female Araneus diadematus…they can look very round when they are about to lay eggs….and the usually white cross can be washed out looking…
