This is a female orb weaver in the genus Araneus..she has just laid her eggs …the orange fuzzy thing she is sitting on is her egg sac .. ….I think it is Araneus diadematus but it is hard to ID them when their abdomens have deflated like this..
Thankfully, mail carriers seem to be very good about not harming spiders and I haven’t heard of any complaining about them either. It’s dogs and humans that are dangerous. My ail carrier has calmly walked through my swarms of hornets, wasps, and bees for decades. But, when my neighbors start gossiping at him he sure can make a quick exit. 😉
