Argiope? Female? My son caught this one. Gorgeous web. I was jealous I hadn’t seen it.

You got it. 🙂 Yes, this is a female, the males don’t have big webs. They approach the female to initiate courting her, a the edge of her web. That gives the male a quick get-away if the female isn’t interested. I’ve only seen this species once, on the edge of a wooded area in South Carolina. My friends and family know that they should get my attention if they see a cool bug because I definitely want to see it! Or an interesting tree, or rock, slime mold…anything.
