Friend thinks it may be a male cat-faced orb weaver? Smaller than similar ones I've seen, have had others similar that are larger and a brighter orange-ish color

Your friend is right, Araneus gemmoides, a cat face spider. Nice photo
Cogsandgears, I can’t tell which gender it is. It could be a male whose pedipalps aren’t visible at this angle or it could be a young female. The adult females are the ones that usually get photographed because they grow ( and live ) much longer than the males.
Ahh yeah that makes sense
I couldn’t get a good look at the pedipalps when I found it so I’m not 100% sure
