My cats found this guy before I did but I don’t think they got beat up too much! I’m thinking some sort of grass spider or fishing spider, based on others I’ve found. They’ve been very patient while I got my pictures, but that could be from being roughed up lol

Dolomedes tenebrosus, a dark fishing spider. Nice photo.
Today I learned that there’s a town in New York named Mexico. Fadedkde, our site recently went back to specializing in the USA and Canada. People in other countries post photos by putting their country name in front of a US State name. So, I looked up whether it exists. Maine has a lot of towns named after countries too. My cat is good at signaling me if there’s a spider for me to photograph. Some insects are attracted to cat food, so spiders set up webs near the food bowl. Your photo came out nicely.
Oh yeah it’s confusing! Mexico was my school, but I live in Palermo- which is a town in Italy. And a ways away is Ithaca, NewYork just can’t seem to make up original names lol.
Thank you! Unfortunately my two aren’t so polite, and prefer to eat bugs that wander inside. It’s always a fight to get to them before they can have a little snack.
