Apologies for the low resolution picture, my friend was not in a very conducive photographing spot. This spider appeared on the ceiling of my second story apartment in Madison, WI. The spider was not in a web, seemed to be nocturnal, and seemed to like crawling on the ceiling. The entire body was nearly black without any stripes or colorful markings on the ventral side. I've never seen such a uniformly dark spider that wasn't in a web. Because the body was so dark, it was difficult to distinguish anything about the eye pattern, which has made it hard for me to identify. The body was very glossy, didn't seem hairy. The legs were also quite dark, but may have had very subtle banding. The large pedipalps on this individual make me think it is male. I didn't capture it because it was in an awkward place, and it hung out on the ceiling for a couple days and then vanished.
