he looks pretty spooky in that lighting! very good picture though, most of the pics on here are a blurry mess. As for what he is, I have zero idea.
Thanks, found him on the wall in a dark part of my house. No light there, so I grabbed a small LED flashlight and got as close as I could with the cam plus zoomed in to really get details. My early guess is some kind of fishing spider, but I am by no means an expert. Hard to tell size based on the picture, nothing to scale him against, but he was a little smaller than my thumb, a juvenile maybe?
dang you got that good of a picture with that small of a spider‽ good job! Did you use your phone or a dedicated camera?
With my phone, iPhone SE (2nd generation) for reference. Honestly a bit surprised myself that it came out that clear. Pictures taken with it tend to be really hit or miss on the blurriness factor. I guess getting as physically close as I could without squishing the poor fella helped, along with maybe the LED flashlight instead of the phone’s built in one? No idea, I’m by no means a photographer.
dang those things are the brick iphones! my phone could never take anything that clear that close. maybe they changed the way the camera works at some point?
I have no clue, to be honest. I’ve never really paid much attention to smartphones, which are best, which do this or that, what’s the newest model, etc. If it functions, that’s good enough for me.
hell yeah. trust me the modern ones aren’t much better. I believe apple got in trouble for purposely making the older phones slower to make people buy the newer phone. that picture looks waaaaay clearer than that my iphone 13 can do.
I really detest iPhones, I don’t trust Apple. My iPad will be replaced by Samsung or an Android tablet. My phones from about 7 years ago took the best photos. I don’t want to carry a dedicated camera around plus the phone. I’ve done that.. My other volunteer work, destroys my phones in about 8 months from the strain of highly accurate GPS location tracking while taking photos. I photograph grave stones and GPS map them within a couple of feet of accuracy. I buy warranteed refurbished high-end phones and burn through them. The good part is that I get… Read more »
The AI processing and the depth sensors have changed. The older clip-on macro lenses don’t work with current phones. My prior phone was a Pixel, it yelled at me on the screen for getting too close. I have a Samsung Galaxy now that tells me for macro mode to hold the lenses about 2 to 3 inches from the subject. There doesn’t seem to be a depth sensor on it. It does help to use an led flashlight with the cellphone. I’ve been experimenting with cellphones cameras for 7 years- it’s frustrating. Some cameras want the lens about 3 inches from the bug. Yeah, I’ve had accidental deaths of a couple bugs. In the A24 movie, “Civil War” there’s a part of the movie that makes me feel better. In the movie, an older news photographer is talking to a young one and tells her to not feel bad about the bad photos, to expect about 1 in 30 to be great.

Really? That’s what the juveniles of those yellow garden spiders look like? Interesting, they really do change quite drastically. See them all the time around where I live, but it’s always the big chonky girls.
