Comments & ID Thoughts
I tried taking a photo again. But the sun is setting and it is hanging in front of a withered brown leaf. Not great background for identifying a brown spider. I am now thinking it isn’t the star orb weaver. Hmm…

Araneus genus orb weaver.
Thank you! She set up her web again across the steps so we are going around the house now and not up the deck. She scuttles a bit when we approach. But doesn’t seem to mind us when we talk to her. She makes really big beautiful webs.
They are good at that, usually about face level. you could try to relocate her to a window nearby, maybe with a small lamp inside to attract flying insects.
She will probably run if you mangle her web, but blocking with a hand, het her onto your hand and let her go at the window. Somtimes they are persistant with porches/steps and may just come back. Where ever she can catch insects.
She’s back! But she picked a better spot that is the side of the deck that is adjacent to our kitchen window that is 1.5 stories up over a perennial garden. Flowers are better than stairs!
Cool.
