Possibly a juvenile of the Araneus genus. It's about 5mm in length measuring from the top of the head to the end of the abdomen. It was found in a potted jasmine plant in a store, so the exact origin is unknown; however the plant was grown in Canada. I assume the spider was on the plant before it arrived at the store as the plant pot was wrapped in a plastic cover which would have made it hard for the spider to climb up.
Just an addendum: the spider appears to be female and is a web building species. I am currently keeping it and feeding it aphids, but am unsure as to wether I should release it as she is doing fine (and has gotten fatter)!
