Common names can vary a bit from place to place, but here in eastern Canada, they are called Wharf Spiders, Dock Spiders or Fishing Spiders. They usually live near water and hunt insects at the water’s edge or on the surface of the water. Most of the time, they are not dangerous or aggressive. The exception is when females move away from the water and climb into high weeds or bushes and make a ‘nursery’ web to protect the eggs and young after they hatch. Once the young hatch, the females can be quite aggressive in defending the young.
Does anyone know what type of spider this is? I found it in my crawl space
Looks like one of the Dolomedes species in the family Pisauridae
What is the common name for it ? Are they bad?
