Comments & ID Thoughts
I have never seen a spider like this! I searched and haven’t seen anything comparable to it online. He is small, mostly black with red accents on the underside of the belly. It has a large “basket” shaped abdomen that is most if his/her body weight. It does not look like an egg sack or baby spiders or anything. The abdomen basket has a black tip at the bottom end, and 3 or 4 black tipped points on the top end. It’s web is large and seems distinct but not symmetrical. I took the photo last Friday. He/she has moved its web from a vertical position to a horizontal position. I also found another, smaller sized spider that looks the same on the other side of the fence from the original pictured spider. Sorry the pictures were really hard to obtain, this is the clearest image I got. I kept getting stuck in its web! Found in my backyard in an urban environment. Thank you!

Looks like a spined micrathena, Micrathena gracilis
This is the closest spider with the same physical attributes I could find, but the abdomen looked so different I wanted to be sure. Definitely the same small black body. Also it states their webs are tightely woven and symmetrical, which this spider’s was not. I think this is the correct species though, thank you!
