I’m guessing this is a northern black widow. The first I’ve ever come in contact with. Latrodectus variolus
Found outside under a small birdbath. There were spider wdbs below. That should have been a clue

Yep it’s a widow

I think it is Latrodectus mactans, a Southern Black Widow. Both, L. variolus and L. mactans are found in North Carolina. I read on Bugguide.net that on L. mactans the second dorsal spot from the head is longer than it is wide. For L. variolus the second spot is wider than it is long. This is a very well-done clear photo.
