I believe it is black and yellow garden spider based on my research since seeing it yesterday. I was fascinated by it as I’ve never seen a web with the zigzag web . It was in shrubs next to a small man-made pond. Sorry that I don't have a better picture.

I see that the picture is appearing sideways. Sorry about that. As I wrote, I think it is a black and yellow garden spider, but I’m a complete novice and that is merely based on some quick research I did this morning. Confirmation or correction would be appreciated.
Quite positive its a writing spider. I live in upstate SC and I see them in my backyard quite often this time of year.

Yes you’re right. I never heard “zipper spider,” I like that one. It’s okay that the photo is sideways. The thing to know with orb weavers is that they almost always have their head facing the ground, so that’s a way to know when to look at a photo sideways:) They’re usually positioned above most other animals, they can look just down to see predators and prey coming.
