So, someone left this on the front seat of my car. It’s obviously not alive, encased in some type of plastic – looks like it was meant to hang as a piece of jewelry. The spider itself looks quite real, however, and there’s a much smaller one in the teardrop above and to the left of the larger one. The top of the abdomen is sort of shield shaped, with 4 large spikey things along the bottom edge and 2 smaller spikes on either side, closer to the head.I have no idea how this got in my car or who… Read more »
Hi, the big spider is a spiny orbweaver, Gasteracantha cancriformis. Did you ever find out who thought this would be funny? Or more importantly, who got into your car?
That’s odd. I agree with Gasteracantha. Since this was encased in resin I don’t know what country the spider originally came from. The spines look a bit on the long side (like G. hasselti), it might be a different species in the genus so I just filed it to genus.
