I'm thinking this is a wolf spider but I'm not sure about the coloring.

It was about the size of the palm of my hand
Hi. Certainly one of the Lyosidae family, likely Hogna species, and these can get intimidatingly large. Colors can range from very light tans to near blacks. I had Hogna carolinensis in my yard, the really big ones, that look strikingly like yours. I can positively identify them, picking them up and examining the bottom, excep for ligh areason he legs, they are all jet black on the bottom.
