Comments & ID Thoughts

Brought back quite a few of these from northern california/very close to Oregon, to parents house in Los Angeles.
They must have been stowaways in my car’s top box climbing in while in the forest. Want to make sure they are not a danger/poisoness to humans as they were carried inside the house within my belongings. Also, they may still be crawling around inside my car... that I camp/sleep in from time to time. thanks for your help

Hi, welcome to Spider ID. 🙂 You have a Funnel Weaver spider (Agelenidae), maybe in the genus Hololena … but there are several other similar genera in CA so I’m only going to file it to family. Like most spiders they are venomous but not considered to be of medical significance to people.

Definitely not Eratigena agrestis (Hobo Spider), and it shouldn’t be a worry even if it were. “Hobo Spiders” are not actually considered to be of medical significance. The “agrestis” in the name is sometimes misinterpreted to mean aggressive but in reality means “in the fields”. They are an imported species native to Europe where they don’t have have the bad reputation they acquired in North America.
