I just found one yesterday myself in Michigan. I believe it’s a male Marbled Orb Weaver, as you also thought. September is the most common month to see them.

I actually spot more in early spring, April, the difference is they are quite young, quite small,and not nearly as noticeable. Recent hatching, the tiny yellow and black spiderling clusters can be found.
