My guess: Araneus diadematus (Cross orb-weaver)
Curious to know if it is male or female?
Size: approximately 1 inch or slightly bigger with legs outstretched
Photo features the spider with a recently caught black house fly. It found an ideal web spot above our compost bin...
Please help identify: my guess is a cross orb-weaver! Also guessing female due to large size and face-down presence in web.
Edit: she’s 1.5 inches long with legs extended. HUGE
I think you are right!
Definitely looks like a Cross spider.
It’s mating season. She’s probably pregnant with a belly full of the father.
Hi. certainly a female cross orb weaver, quite harmless. Perhaps huge for your neck of he woods, many of myspiders are near the size of your hand. Gentle giants though.
She is in a good place to catch flying insects. Leave her undisturbed.
So how do I label this photo as officially identified? Does the website moderator do that?
