Comments & ID Thoughts

I was preparing to hitch a trailer up and this guy fell out of the ball socket. The trailer had sat for years and when scooped out the socket this black spider dropped to the ground along with a wasp. I then realized there was a small wasp's nest inside the socket. I grabbed my phone to take a picture; I added the quarter for perspective. I believe this spider is the redback spider (Latrodectus hasseltii). During the day of moving trailers and old debris I saw four other large black widows with the hour glass shape on it's lower abdomen which is typical of the black widows in our area. This region is considered semi-arid.

Reminds me of a Black Widow. Seeing as it’s under a man made structure, rocks etc

Hi. In Canada, this would be Latrodectus variolus, L. hasseltii are not found in north America.
Is the little gal still alive? common for many wasps to prey on spiders.

Wow, It looks like you can even see the sting wounds on it. Poor thing. I didn’t know these were in Canada, I thought they were exclusive to Australia. Have you seen any other redbacks in Canada? Great photo!
