If I'm not mistaken this beautiful spider is a Golden Silk Orbweaver. I found her on the edge of the woods that surrounds our property. First time I've ever seen one and I haven't seen one since. Commonly called a Banana Spider or a Calico Spider. The information I gathered is as follows. Please correct me if anything is wrong.

Hi. 🙂 You’re right that this is a Golden Silk Orbweaver (Nephila clavipes). Corrections are that the “c” in clavipes should be lowercase, this indicates a species level identification. Also the genus Nephila is currently placed in the family Araneidae, recently moved from Nephilidae, and prior to that Tetragnathidae.
Thanks! If I understand correctly when written as the scientific name Nephila clavipes-the c is lowercase.
Was the the information correct on the species? And if yes that would be uppercase, correct?
Araneidae (family, regular font), Nephila (genus, first letter uppercase and italics ) clavipes (species, first letter lowercase and italics … you don’t need to use the italics though that’s just bonus points). You’d write it Nephila clavipes.
Thank you. I’ve never had a reason to learn the proper way to write them, but when I do write stuff like that (like here) I want to do so correctly.
You’re welcome, I’m sure I wrote everything wrong for quite some time when I first started figuring out how to ID spiders and I appreciated it when someone finally pointed out my mistake and explained it to me.
I hope you don’t mind but I sent you a message. (A kind of long one sorry )
