After uploading this image, downloaded iNaturalist and it ID’s it as a Western spotted Orbweaver – Neoscona oaxacensis – . AI is getting good. I also use Merlin to ID birds.
Yes,I agree with the ID and your thoughts on image recognition. Google Lens works well for insects and plants, a single leaf can be enough to get the species and it has images of larval stages of insects for its own image database. I tried it on a wild plant that I couldn’t identify. It gave me two different plants as results. The cool thing is that the two plants can occasionally crossbreed and have offspring that are described as looking like my unamed plant.
