Is this a wolf spider? We found it on the stairs to our finished carpet basement. When it put it in a cup to put it outside, the spider magically became 3 spiders. Of similar size too. So they must have been on each other the whole time?! I live in Ohio in a development where apparently these large spiders are common but have a small infant and want to ensure it’s not dangerous.

Yes this is a wolf spider in the family Lycosidae. It looks a lot like one of the Hogna or Tigrosa species.
