Photo taken in web built between house, and basement bulkhead in flower garden area. Interesting herringbone stitch type areas of web leading out of center, for strength?
Hi, yes this is a silver banded garden spider, Neoscona trifasciata. They are fantastically dramatic looking. Yes, the zigzag webbing that can form rays from the center of the web is thought to add strength. The sigular for that web band is stabilimenta, stabilimentum is the plural. It is a signiture trait of orbweaver spiders to have it in circular, orb webs. It is also hypothesized that stabilimentum help larger animals see and avoid the big webs, which protects the spider and saves her a bit of work.
