Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

I saw one of these in my house a couple weeks ago. I caught and threw it out. Today I was petting my dog and saw this dead one under my dresser. I had posted a pic of the one I saw a couple weeks back on my fb wondering what kind it was. Thought I'd give it another shot. Looks like a daddy long leg but definitely different legs.

Hi, this looks like an opilione, they are a different kind of arachnid than spiders are. They aren’t dangerous, they’re built for escape. Their legs detach easily so they can escape if a pradator grabs one by the leg. The leg can keep moving independently after it is detached. That probably evolved because it confused predators long enough for the opilione to disappear and eventually grow a replacement limb. A common name is harvestman. Another is daddy long legs. Unfortunately that common name is used for other arthropods too, like cellar spiders.
