This spider bit my mom before she squashed it. Unfortunately this is the best picture. Im concerned it could be a recluse. Taken in Southern California. She said it was in a book.

Hi, welcome to Spider ID. ๐ Your spider has banded legs, Recluse species (Loxosceles spp.) in your region don’t, I’m not aware of any that do. I can’t give a firm ID from this image. One possibility is something like a male Barn Funnel Weaver (Tegenaria domestica). Compare and see if that looks like your spider:
