Dark brown.
Hi, welcome to Spider ID. 🙂 You have a Tigrosa helluo (Wolf Spider).
Thank you!!! My brother insisted it was a Brown Recluse and I was terrified! I caught it and set it free outdoors. I appreciate the identifying.
Haha … that’s what brothers are for. You’re welcome. Brown Recluse Spiders are not established in NJ. Isolated populations are certainly possible especially in places where things have been shipped in from out of state, but they’re not running all over the place like some people would lead you to believe. The map in the following link shows the states BugGuide.net has had submissions of L. reclusa from. The oldest submission is from 2005 and there is still nothing from NJ.

That is so good to hear!!! Since learning about the recluse I’ve been so scared of them. I have taught my grandkids about them and being careful near the wood pile in their backyard. Spiders fascinate me and when I see one indoors it freaks me out. I always try to catch & photograph & identify them. Ticks too! I really appreciate your reply and info. Makes me feel better knowing the recluse isn’t in NJ. Yay!
Even if they were in NJ, they likely wouldn’t be in the woodpile – they’re more common indoors. Ticks and Black Widows however, those might be in the wood pile so still a good idea to be mindful. 🙂
