Comments & ID Thoughts
This spider was on my porch. The day before I took this picture I spotted a black widow in my yard. I was told this is not a black widow. What on earth is this spider, and is it poisonous?

Hi, this might be a red stripe spider, Castianeira crocata. They have a more elongate abdomen than black widows. There is a similar species, C. descripta, that is possible too. I can’t answer the question about the venom because I’m not sure what it is. If you see another please post a photo. Meanwhile, someone else on this site might be able to tell you more.
