Picture of unidentified spider

Comments & ID Thoughts

Was out around 10pm on a post outside of my front door. We have tons of other common spiders around my house, but nothing like this. There didn’t seem to be any yellow on him so I know it’s not an orb weaver that looks similar(forgot the name). Kinda worried though, is this dude rare? Is he venomous? Spiders seem to treat my house as a breeding ground so.

As long as he’s the only dude treating your house as a breeding ground, things are good. You had it right about what he is,. He’s missing his yellow. I’m guessing that their colors wear off with age. They remind me of old metal Matchbox cars that wear down to the silver base metal with enough play. It’s a silver banded orbweaver, Argiope trifasciata. They have some venom for self defense but they aren’t any more potent than a hornet.
